How to greet someone correctly for Christmas

ESSENTIAL CHRISTMASTIME VOCABULARY FOR GREETINGS

Many of my new students are not sure how to greet someone this time of year. So here are the most common greetings native speakers in the U.S. use:

Merry Christmas! (not Happy Christmas)
Happy Hanukkah! (or Happy Chanukah)
Happy New Year!

What if you’re not sure or don’t know what the other person celebrates? You can use these neutral greetings:

Season’s Greetings!
Happy Holidays!

Please note that in American English, “holidays” refers to “fiestas”, and not “vacaciones”. Also, “holiday” means “feriado”.

If you wish to refer to someone’s vacation, you can say:

Have a nice vacation!

There you go! We have just seen the most typical ways in American English to greet someone at the end of the year.

Happy Holidays to all of you!
